Ernst Haeckel, 1904
A plate of jellyfish from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, carrying a quiet personal story about the naming of one species.

This is plate 8 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, dated 1904, and it is devoted to the Discomedusae, a group of jellyfish. One of the organisms on it, D. annasethe, was named by Haeckel after his wife, Anna Sethe. She had died the year before he observed the creature, so the name carries a personal note within a scientific study. Haeckel worked as a zoologist and marine biologist as well as an artist, and he described and named a great many species during his career. The plate reflects both sides of that work.
