About this artwork

This is plate 64 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, dated 1904 and titled Siphoneae. It brings together several green algae of the Chlorophyta group, each shown in its overall form. Among them are various Caulerpa species, with their branching, leaf-like and frond-like growth, as well as Struvea plumosa, Acetabularia and Bornetella capitata. The Bornetella is drawn with a lengthwise cut through its lower head, and Neomeris appears both whole and in cross-section. Set side by side, the different shapes read almost like a small study collection of marine plant life.

On your wall: Its botanical subject and green-leaning theme suit studies, libraries, calm living rooms and bathrooms, especially where natural history or plant-inspired decor is already part of the setting.
