Birch was painted by Hilma af Klint in 1922 and belongs to her series "On the Viewing of Flowers and Trees". The title points to the birch tree as its subject, and the series places it alongside other plants as things to be looked at closely. Af Klint was a Swedish artist whose paintings are counted among the first major abstract works in Western art, and she was also a mystic. This work has been shown in an exhibition at Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
On your wall: Its modern, abstract character and natural subject suit a calm living room, a study or a reading corner where there is space to look at it slowly.

Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings rank among the earliest major abstract works in Western art. Much of her output came before the first purely abstract pieces by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. She belonged to The Five, a circle of women drawn to Theosophy, and her diagram-like paintings give visual form to complex spiritual ideas.
