About this artwork

This is Group X, No. 2, Altarpiece, painted by Hilma af Klint in 1915 and part of her group of altarpieces. Af Klint was a Swedish artist and mystic, and her paintings are considered among the first major abstract works in Western art. Much of her work came before the first purely abstract compositions by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. She belonged to The Five, a circle of women inspired by Theosophy, and her paintings, which can resemble diagrams, were a way of giving visual form to complex spiritual ideas.

On your wall: An abstract work like this suits a living room, study or hallway where modern interiors benefit from a considered focal point with a sense of history.
