Disconalia gastroblasta is a siphonophore, a delicate marine creature of the kind gathered in plate 17 of Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur. This image is a derivative of that plate, dated 1904. Haeckel was a German zoologist and marine biologist who also worked as an artist, and he described and named thousands of species during his career. Here his scientific eye and his interest in the shapes of living things come together in a single study.
