Captain Linnaeus Tripe made this photograph in 1858 of the entrance to the Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple in Madurai. The temple has several gateways, each rising higher the further it stands from the centre, and it was one of the monuments Tripe chose for his series documenting India's architecture. It is an albumen print made from a waxed paper negative. That same year India became a colony ruled by Britain, and the new colonial government supported his project. Tripe, a military officer working to protect the interests of the British East India Company, sold the images to the British public in pre-selected sets mounted in albums.
On your wall: Its monochrome tones and strong architectural structure suit a study, library, hallway or living room where a calm, considered black and white image is wanted.
