About this artwork

Eugène Atget photographed this view of Rue Simon-le-Franc in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. The street is narrow and lined with tall buildings, and hanging 'Hôtel' signs break the line of the façades. Far down the road, a cart and a few figures can be made out. The print is an albumen photograph in warm sepia tones, a process that gives the surface a soft, gentle quality. Atget set out to record the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation changed them, and this quiet street belongs to that wider project.

On your wall: Its soft sepia-toned street scene suits a study, hallway, dining room or living space, especially where a calm, historical note is wanted alongside wood, books or muted colours.

About Eugène Atget

Eugène Atget was a French photographer and self-styled flâneur who set out to record the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation swept them away. He sold his pictures to artists and craftspeople, and later inspired the surrealists. Berenice Abbott first published most of his photographs after his death, when his reputation began to grow.
