About this artwork

Taken in 1907, this photograph shows impoverished immigrants making the journey back to Europe. Alfred Stieglitz chose to treat the scene as a study in shape and form, and the image set him on a path from pictorialism towards modernism. Looking back on his career in 1942, he named it an achievement of modern art that anticipated Cubism. Stieglitz was an American photographer who spent some fifty years helping to establish photography as an art form, so this picture sits at an important point in that story.

On your wall: Its black and white tones and graphic structure suit studies, hallways, living rooms and offices, especially alongside simple, modern furnishings.
