About this artwork

Francis Frith made this photograph in 1857, on the second of his three trips to Egypt. It shows a fallen statue at the Ramesseum in Thebes. He worked with a mammoth plate, a large glass negative of typically 18 by 22 inches, which allowed him to record the finest details of the scene. Members of his expedition appear in the picture, and their presence helps convey how monumental the sculpture is. The print is an albumen print made from a wet collodion negative. It was published in an album of 20 mammoth-plate views, the only published volume of Frith's large photographs and one of the first devoted to large-scale prints.

On your wall: Its black and white tones and ancient subject suit a study, library, hallway or living room, particularly where a calm, historical note is welcome.
