This albumen print was made in France in 1904 by Eugène Atget, whose full name was Jean-Eugène-Auguste Atget (1857–1927). Albumen printing gives photographs a soft, finely detailed surface, and it suits the measured, observant eye he is known for. Atget was a pioneer of documentary photography and set out to record the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation swept them away. He sold his work to artists and craftspeople, and later inspired the surrealists. Berenice Abbott first published much of his work after his death. The original is held at the Art Institute of Chicago.
On your wall: Its black and white tones and calm, documentary feel suit a study, hallway, library or living room, especially alongside other photography or classic furnishings.
