Captain Linnaeus Tripe, 1858
Rows of niches hold carved Hindu gods along the base of a vast temple, seen in Linnaeus Tripe's carefully composed black and white photograph.

Captain Linnaeus Tripe photographed the outer walls of the vimana, the structure rising above the inner sanctum of one of the largest temples built on the Indian subcontinent and still standing today. The double-storied base is divided by niches that hold images of Hindu gods. Inside lies a sanctum with a monolithic linga, the emblem marking the presence of the god Shiva. Tripe worked with waxed paper negatives rather than glass, possibly because he wanted to avoid the weight and the risk of breakage.
On your wall: Its monochrome architectural detail suits studies, libraries, hallways and calm living spaces where a considered, history-minded image can reward a closer look.
