Odilon Redon painted this work around 1867 in France, using oil on cardboard. As the title tells us, it is a study of poppies and daisies, two familiar wildflowers brought together in one composition. Redon was born in 1840 and is remembered as a French Symbolist draughtsman, printmaker and painter, so it is interesting to see him here turning to flowers as his subject. The work is now in the Art Institute of Chicago.
On your wall: Its floral subject suits a kitchen, hallway, bedroom or reading corner, where a gentle botanical picture can bring a touch of the garden indoors.

Odilon Redon was a French artist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter. He belonged to the Symbolist movement, which favoured imagination and suggestion over straightforward description. Moving between drawing, printmaking and painting, he built a body of work that sits comfortably within that tradition and rewards slow, attentive looking.
