About this artwork

This is a hand-coloured engraving of a male wild turkey, Meleagris gallopavo, standing among cane plants. It is labelled Plate I and carries a printed caption naming the bird as the Great American Cock, with Wild Turkey given as its common name. The plate belongs to The Birds of America, the large-format book of engraved colour plates by John James Audubon, who set out to make a pictorial record of the bird species of North America. William Home Lizars is associated with the engravings. The print is also linked with Audubon's text volumes, Ornithological Biography.

On your wall: The natural subject and the leafy cane setting suit a study, hallway, dining room or cosy sitting room, especially where botanical or natural history prints are already hung.
