Hunhar II, 1765
A single marigold in bloom, painted in India in the 1760s with gum tempera and gold. Its warm colour hints at a long journey from South America.

Hunhar II painted this flowering marigold around 1765, using gum tempera and gold on paper. It comes from Mughal India, with Murshidabad or Lucknow as the possible place of making. The marigold itself has an interesting past. Portuguese trade, which flourished through the 1500s and 1600s, carried it to India from South America, along with potatoes and tomatoes. All of these became part of everyday Indian life. Marigolds were prized for their vivid colour, and they were made into garlands. They are still widely used in devotional offerings across India today.
On your wall: Its botanical subject and warm, vivid flower colour suit a kitchen, a dining room, a hallway or a quiet reading corner.
