Walter Crane's illustration takes its title from the idea that, in the earliest times, a simple foot-race was the only event. It belongs to The Story of Greece Told to Boys and Girls by Mary Macgregor, a book that moves from the myths and legends of gods and heroes to the conquests of Alexander the Great. The image connects to the ancient Olympic Games and to running, and it shows how the contest began before other events were added. Crane was an English illustrator who made a great deal of work for children's books, and this picture sits comfortably in that tradition of clear, readable storytelling.
On your wall: Its clean, narrative line suits a study, hallway or children's room, and it pairs well with botanical prints in a calm, classically minded gallery wall.
