About this artwork

A full, evenly balanced arrangement of flowers rises from a blue-and-white porcelain vase, with scrolling ornament on either side. The vase is painted with a European-style landscape and follows the type made in China for export to Europe. The overflowing vase is one of the oldest motifs in Indian art, where it conveys abundance. This picture was made for an elite patron in northern India and hints at the prosperity that came from international connections. The scrollwork may ultimately derive from Persian motifs, reworked in a European style by Indian artists. It was painted in Mughal Lucknow with gum tempera and gold on paper, around 1750 to 1800.

On your wall: Its balanced composition and blue-and-white vase suit a calm living room, a dining area or a hallway, especially where a formal, classic look is wanted.
