This early Mughal portrait is thought to show Prince Danyal, the youngest son of the emperor Akbar and said to be his favourite. He is shown in his mid-teens, wearing an archer's thumb ring and holding a white flower, a nod to his epithet, Nosegay of Fortune's Spring. Prayer beads are in his right hand, while a sword, knife and dagger hang from his sash. Danyal later served his father as a military officer, leading contingents to the Deccan plateau. The work was painted around 1580–90 in gum tempera and gold on paper.
On your wall: Its single flower and fine, jewel-like detail suit a study, a reading corner or a calm sitting room, especially alongside other floral or botanical pieces.
