This watercolour by Walter Crane shows Red House in Bexleyheath, a house designed by the architect Philip Webb for the artist and designer William Morris. Crane was an English artist and book illustrator, and here he turns his attention to a single building with a notable link to Morris. It is a quiet, architectural subject, and a pleasing one for anyone interested in the surroundings in which designers and artists lived and worked. The painting also belongs to a group of works that place the house within the London Borough of Bexley.
