About this artwork

This is one of four paintings that first decorated sliding doors, dividing the interiors of Japanese buildings. Later they were mounted as hanging scrolls, painted in ink and colour on paper. Kano Motonobu is credited with joining two traditions here: the subtlety of Chinese black ink painting, seen in the rocks and hills, and the colour and realism of Japanese painting, seen in the birds and flowers. His work was prized by the upper levels of society in Kyoto, and landscapes like this were valued for their contemplative feel and for the refined taste of those who commissioned them.

On your wall: Its calm landscape of flowers and birds suits quiet living rooms, studies and bedrooms, or any space where a contemplative, nature-inspired note is welcome.

About Kano Motonobu

Kanō Motonobu was a Japanese painter and calligrapher of the Kanō school. Through his political connections, patronage and careful organisation, he shaped the school into the lasting institution it became. Its system went on to train most painters of the Edo period (1603–1868). After his death, he was known as Kohōgen.
