About this artwork

This engraving by Basilius Besler dates from 1613 and belongs to the Hortus Eystettensis, the large florilegium for which he is best known. The subject is the sunflower, Helianthus annuus, shown in the manner of a botanical illustration. Besler was a respected apothecary and botanist in Nuremberg, and his plates were made to record plants with clarity. The print is an engraving, and the museum collection in Boston that holds a copy lists it among its engravings of flowers.

On your wall: Its botanical subject and engraved line suit a study, hallway, kitchen or dining room, especially alongside other natural history prints.
