This is Plate 17 from John James Audubon's The Birds of America, showing the Carolina Turtle Dove, now known as the mourning dove. Four doves appear among the white flowers of a Stuartia, with a nest among the branches. The plate was hand-coloured, and the printed caption runs along the bottom edge. Audubon set out to make a complete pictorial record of the birds of North America, and the book's large-format plates were engraved in Scotland and England between 1827 and 1838.
On your wall: With its soft garden subject and white blossoms, it suits a calm living room, a bedroom or a study, and sits well alongside other botanical or natural history prints.
