Joseph Stella painted Flowers, Italy in 1931, working in oil on canvas. The picture is perfectly square, measuring almost 190 centimetres on each side, which gives it a generous presence. The title points to flowers as its subject, and to Italy as its setting or inspiration. Stella, born in Italy and later working in America, is best known for his bold pictures of industrial life, including the Brooklyn Bridge, so this floral subject shows another side of his work. The painting is now in the Phoenix Art Museum.
On your wall: With its floral subject and square format, it suits living rooms, dining areas and hallways where a bold, modern focal point is welcome.

Joseph Stella was an Italian-born American painter associated with Futurism. He is best known for his portrayals of industrial America, above all his images of the Brooklyn Bridge. His work is also linked with American Precisionism, a movement active from the 1910s to the 1940s, and shows a keen interest in the modern city.
