Painted in France in 1938, Femme au masque, or "Woman with a Mask", brings together a female figure and a mask, a subject Picabia returned to in more than one work. It is catalogued among his Cubist paintings, so you can expect a figure built from flattened, overlapping forms rather than a straightforward likeness. Picabia was a French avant-garde painter and poet, closely associated with Dada, and his work often rewards a viewer who stays with it. Here the mask gives the picture its quiet tension: it hides and reveals at once.
On your wall: Its modern, abstract character suits a living room, study or hallway where a figurative work with a little mystery can sit beside plain walls and simple furniture.

Francis Picabia was a French avant-garde artist whose work crossed many fields. He painted, wrote poetry, made films, published a magazine and worked with typography. He is closely associated with Dada, the movement that shaped much of his outlook, and his restless, varied output reflects the experimental spirit of that circle.
