Wassily Kandinsky, 1910
Kandinsky's 1910 view of Murnau, with its church steeple, painted in oil on canvas in an Expressionist spirit.
No VAT charged. Free delivery in Switzerland from CHF 99. Delivery details
This 1910 oil painting by Wassily Kandinsky shows the church of St. Nikolaus in Murnau am Staffelsee, with its steeple rising above the town. It is a cityscape, yet it belongs to Expressionism, where a place is shaped by the painter's own vision rather than recorded plainly. Kandinsky is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art, which makes it interesting to see him here working with a recognisable place. The work is painted in oil on canvas and is held today in the Van Abbemuseum.
On your wall: A good fit for living rooms, studies and hallways where a modern, expressive townscape can bring a sense of place and artistic character.

Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist, born in Moscow. He came to painting relatively late, beginning his studies at thirty. He went on to work in Germany during the late Belle Époque and the interwar years, and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art.
