Kandinsky painted Improvisation 19 in oil on canvas in 1911. The work is semi-abstract and loosely handled, with a palette of blues, purples and reds. On the right, elongated figures are drawn in black outline, while on the left a cluster of more colourful figures gathers. Kandinsky is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art, and this picture sits within that move away from literal depiction. The painting belongs to the Lenbachhaus collection.
On your wall: Its deep blues, purples and reds suit living rooms, studies and hallways where a modern, abstract piece can bring colour and movement to the walls.
