About this artwork

Painted in 1540, this scene was commissioned by the Protestant rulers of Saxony and set near their residence, Hartenfels Castle, which can be seen in the background. In the bottom left corner John Frederick the Magnanimous, dressed in dark green hunting clothes, spans his crossbow as he waits for courtiers and dogs to drive a stag across the river. His wife, the Electress Sibylle, stands at the right, ready to take the first ceremonial shot. Hunting with dogs was a passion of the Saxon prince electors, and these occasions were carefully rehearsed, with hunting horn signals coordinating the action. Cranach dated the work and signed it with his winged snake at lower right. It is painted in oil, originally on wood and later transferred to masonite.

On your wall: Its detailed story and landscape setting suit a study, library, dining room or hallway, where there is time to explore the scene closely.

About Lucas Cranach

The name Cranach belongs to a family of German painters. Lucas Cranach the Elder was the father of Hans Cranach and of Lucas Cranach the Younger, both of whom also painted. Lucas the Younger in turn had a son, Augustin Cranach (1554–1595), who followed the same path as a painter.
