Peter Paul Rubens, c. 1615
Rubens turns a sacred family into a tender, human scene, where every glance leads back to Mary and the child in her lap.

Painted in oil on panel around 1615, this work shows the Holy Family in a warm, domestic spirit. The infant Jesus cuddles on Mary's lap, while Elizabeth and the young John the Baptist look on in wonder. Joseph tends a lamb, a symbol of Jesus's future sacrifice. None of the figures has a halo, and all wear clothes of Rubens's own day. Nobody looks out at us; instead their gazes interlock and return to Mary. Rubens drew on the robust forms of Michelangelo and Raphael, which he had seen in Italy. The composition proved so successful that assistants painted variants and engravings were made after it.
On your wall: Its warm family subject and rounded, classical figures suit a living room, dining room or quiet bedroom where a traditional, calm atmosphere is wanted.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat, regarded as the most influential figure in Flemish Baroque painting. His richly charged compositions drew on classical and Christian history, and his style prized movement, colour and sensuality. He painted altarpieces, portraits, landscapes and mythological or allegorical scenes, and also designed tapestry cartoons and book frontispieces for Antwerp publishers.
