Salvator Rosa, 1645
Witches gather in broad daylight, brooms and skulls in hand, in Salvator Rosa's darkly comic scene of preparation for the Sabbath.

Painted in oil on canvas around 1645–49, this noon scene shows several weathered old witches getting ready to travel to the Sabbath. They clutch skulls, hold brooms and slice lizards, one of them flaying a writhing creature to obtain the innards for magical ointments. Witches were usually said to ride goats, but Rosa gives them an owl, a bird of ill omen. The cruelty of witchcraft is plain, yet setting such grotesque figures in full daylight brings a touch of comedy. The lighter palette and mood reflect Rosa's taste for satire and his wish to expose human folly.
On your wall: Its lively, macabre subject suits a study, library or characterful sitting room where a classic painting with a sly sense of humour can start conversation.

Salvator Rosa was an Italian Baroque painter, admired for romantic landscapes and history paintings often set in dark, untamed nature. He worked in Naples, Rome and Florence, sometimes moving on after his sharp satire made him enemies. Famous in his lifetime, he was also a poet, actor, musician and printmaker, and his influence lasted into the early nineteenth century.
