About this artwork

Van Dyck painted this full-length portrait in oils on canvas, around 1623. A woman in a red gown and ruff stands before a dark curtain, her child in a blue striped dress reaching up towards her. Her rich clothing and the scale of the picture signal her standing, yet the warmth in her face and the child's unplanned gesture bring the scene to life. Portraits of wealthy sitters had often stressed status above all else. Van Dyck's approach added energy and a sense of theatre, and it changed elite portraiture in Genoa.

On your wall: The deep red, dark drapery and formal scale suit a dining room, library, study or a generous hallway, particularly where traditional or richly coloured interiors are wanted.
