In this 1884 oil painting, a lone peasant girl pauses in her work to listen to a lark singing somewhere in the distance. The sun is rising behind her, and its golden glow washes over the landscape, underlining how deeply the moment moves her. Jules Breton, born in 1827, grew up in the village of Courrières in northern France. He admired the people of the countryside for their resourcefulness and their closeness to nature, and he became hugely popular by painting them in an idealised manner. The work is now in the Art Institute of Chicago.
On your wall: Its warm golden light and quiet rural scene suit living rooms, bedrooms, studies and reading corners where a calm, contemplative mood is wanted.

Jules Breton was a French naturalist painter of the 19th century. The countryside of France shaped much of his work, and he drew on traditional methods of painting. Through his pictures he became one of the main voices conveying the beauty and gentle, idyllic side of rural life to a wider audience.
