About this artwork

Johann Liss painted this Cupid, also called Amor, in oil on canvas around 1630. The god of love looks straight out at the viewer, and the concentrated energy of his pose makes the encounter feel immediate. Liss had studied in Holland and Antwerp before travelling to Rome and Venice around 1620, and both journeys show here. The rich colours and fluid brushwork recall earlier Venetian painters such as Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese, while the strong contrasts of light and shadow owe a debt to Caravaggio. Liss was a German Baroque painter, and this work sits in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

On your wall: Its deep shadows and rich colours suit a sitting room, study or bedroom, particularly where traditional furnishings or warm, low lighting call for a figure with presence.
