Painted in 1913, this oil on canvas is a Futurist work by the Italian artist Umberto Boccioni (1882–1916). As the title tells us, its subject is a soccer player, approached through the idea of dynamism: movement and energy matter here more than a fixed, solid figure. Boccioni was one of the principal figures of Futurism, and his interest in the dynamism of form and the breaking up of solid mass is part of what makes his work so distinctive. The painting is held in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
On your wall: Its energetic, abstract character suits studies, living rooms and open-plan spaces where a bold, modern piece can bring movement to the walls.

Umberto Boccioni was an Italian painter and sculptor, and one of the principal figures of Futurism, helping to shape the movement's radical outlook. His work is known for its sense of dynamism in form and its breaking apart of solid mass. Though his life was short, his ideas guided other artists long afterwards.
