About this artwork

This 1926 painting by Henri Matisse looks across a harbour where small boats are moored along a stone quay. Blue water fills much of the foreground, while a curving road leads the eye towards hills in the distance. It is an oil painting, signed by Matisse. Matisse is known above all as a painter, admired for his use of colour and his fluid, original draughtsmanship. The work is held in France, in the Fondation Bemberg.

On your wall: The cool blues and calm harbour subject suit a living room, hallway or study, particularly where a quiet coastal note would complement modern, uncluttered interiors.
