Painted in oil on canvas by Henri Rousseau in 1910, L'amour des oiseaux is a small work, just 16 by 12 centimetres. The title speaks of the love of birds, and the painting sits among works that show birds. It was shown in Berlin at the Erster Deutscher Herbstsalon in 1913, and later appeared in exhibitions at Galerie Beyeler and Galerie Geiger in Basel. Rousseau, known as Le Douanier, painted in the Naïve manner and turned to painting full-time after leaving his work as a toll and tax collector.
On your wall: Its bird subject and intimate scale suit a reading nook, a hallway or a bedroom, where a quiet, considered picture can be enjoyed up close.

Henri Rousseau was a French post-Impressionist painter who worked in the Naïve, or Primitive, manner. He was nicknamed Le Douanier, a playful nod to his job collecting tolls and taxes. He began painting seriously in his early forties and, by the age of 49, had retired from that work to devote himself fully to art.
