Henri Rousseau, 1909
Henri Rousseau's 1909 view of Bagneux, a scene from the edge of Paris, painted in oil on canvas.

Henri Rousseau painted this scene of Bagneux, on the outskirts of Paris, in 1909. It is an oil painting on canvas, and it now belongs to the Ohara Museum of Art. Rousseau, known as Le Douanier, worked in the Naïve manner and began painting seriously in his early forties. He gave up his job as a toll and tax collector to paint full-time. The title points to an everyday place at the edge of the city rather than a grand subject, which suits the plain, direct way he approached his work.
On your wall: A quiet landscape of the city's edge, it would sit comfortably in a living room, study or hallway where a modest, characterful picture is welcome.

Text based on Ohara Museum of Art.
Henri Rousseau was a French post-Impressionist painter who worked in the Naïve, or Primitive, manner. He was nicknamed Le Douanier, a playful nod to his job collecting tolls and taxes. He began painting seriously in his early forties and, by the age of 49, had retired from that work to devote himself fully to art.
