Edvard Munch painted this view of the Seine at Saint-Cloud in 1890. It is an oil painting on canvas, and it is held today in the Munch Museum. The title points to a river scene, and the subject is a familiar one in European painting. Munch is best known for The Scream of 1893, yet this earlier work shows another side of his practice: a landscape taken from the water's edge rather than from the figure. It is worth spending time with the way the river is handled and how the scene holds together on the canvas.
On your wall: A river view like this suits a calm living room, a study or a hallway, where it can bring a sense of open space and quiet to the wall.

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter. His best-known work, The Scream, dates from 1893 and has become one of the most recognised and admired images in Western art. If you are drawn to bold, expressive pictures that stay in the memory, his work is a rewarding place to begin.
