Painted in 1898, this is a landscape in oil paint by Henri Rousseau, the French post-Impressionist often known as Le Douanier. The nickname was a humorous nod to his work as a toll and tax collector. He began painting seriously in his early forties and left his job at 49 to devote himself to art full-time. His work belongs to the Naïve or Primitive manner, and this landscape comes from that same part of his career.
On your wall: A landscape like this suits living rooms, studies and hallways where you would like a quiet, painterly view to catch the eye.
