Painted in 1943, this oil on canvas by Fernand Léger shows a woman together with butterflies, a pairing named in its title. Léger signed and dated it '43 in the lower right. The painting measures 73 by 91.4 centimetres and is now in the Art Institute of Chicago. Léger began with a personal form of cubism and gradually moved towards a more figurative, populist style, with boldly simplified modern subjects. That approach is a good lens for looking at this portrait.
On your wall: A figure study with a lively, graphic feel, it would suit a living room, study or hallway where a modern, abstract picture can hold the wall.

Fernand Léger was a French painter, sculptor and filmmaker. He began by developing a personal form of cubism, then gradually moved towards a more figurative, populist style. His boldly simplified treatment of modern subjects has led many to see him as a forerunner of pop art.
