About this artwork

Painted in 1914, this landscape is a watercolour by August Macke, and the title points to a house set among garden greenery. Macke was a German Expressionist and a leading member of Der Blaue Reiter, a painter who took from the avant-garde whatever interested him most. Watercolour suits that outlook well, as it lets a scene be built from loose, translucent washes of colour. The work is now held in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum.

On your wall: Its garden subject and watercolour lightness suit living rooms, studies and hallways, especially in modern interiors that welcome a calm touch of the outdoors.

About August Macke

August Macke was a German Expressionist painter and one of the leading members of Der Blaue Reiter. Working in a lively period for German art, he took in the avant-garde movements emerging across Europe and wove the elements that interested him into his own painting. Like his friend Franz Marc, he died in the First World War.
