Matisse painted this still life in 1901, taking as his subject a bouquet of flowers arranged in a porcelain vase, as the title tells us. It is worked in oil paint on cardboard mounted on a panel, a modest support that gives the picture an intimate scale. Matisse is best known for his use of colour and his fluid, original drawing, and flower studies such as this one belong to the long tradition of the still life. The painting is now part of the Ann & Gordon Getty Collection in the United States.
On your wall: A flower still life like this suits a calm corner of a living room, a dining area, a hallway or a reading nook where a small moment of colour is welcome.

Henri Matisse was a French artist, best known as a painter, though he also worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. His art is admired for its bold use of colour and for a fluid, original approach to drawing. Both qualities give his work a distinctive character that remains easy to recognise.
