Le Remorqueur, also known as The Tug, is an oil painting on canvas by the French artist Fernand Léger, dated 1920. As the title tells us, its subject is a tugboat, a working vessel of the modern age. Léger was known for his boldly simplified treatment of modern subject matter, and that sense of clarity is a good way into this picture. The painting is held at the Museum of Grenoble, which bought it directly from the artist in 1928.
On your wall: Its modern, simplified approach to a working vessel suits contemporary living rooms, studies and offices, especially where a confident, graphic piece is wanted.

Fernand Léger was a French painter, sculptor and filmmaker. He began by developing a personal form of cubism, then gradually moved towards a more figurative, populist style. His boldly simplified treatment of modern subjects has led many to see him as a forerunner of pop art.
