A single chrysanthemum, seen straight on, by a painter who returned to the flower again and again.

Mondrian was fascinated by the intricate structure of chrysanthemums and painted these delicate flowers throughout his career. Here he shows one blossom, viewed from the front, in a way that recalls the stylised flowers found in Japanese prints. It is oil on canvas. He added his initials and the date near the bottom edge after the flower was painted. Because he kept coming back to the subject, even in his later years, the work may have been finished as late as 1942, the year he exhibited it in New York.
On your wall: A quiet, focused single bloom that suits a study, bedroom or hallway, and sits comfortably alongside modern interiors and abstract works.
