About this artwork

Corot painted this woodland scene in the summer of 1842, while visiting Lormes, a small village in the Morvan region of Burgundy. The area was known for its dense woodlands and picturesque falls. A seated goat shepherd leans against a curving tree trunk, yet the figure does not claim the eye. Instead, the interlacing forms of trunks and branches, stretching up and across the picture, take centre stage. It is an oil painting on fabric, and it rewards a slow look at the rhythm of the trees.

On your wall: Its woodland subject and sense of calm suit a reading nook, a quiet living room, a study or a bedroom where a natural, restful feel is wanted.

About Jean Baptiste Camille Corot

Camille Corot was a French painter of landscapes and portraits, and also made etchings. He is regarded as a pivotal figure in landscape painting. His large body of work drew on the Neo-Classical tradition while also anticipating the outdoor painting that Impressionism would later embrace, which gives his pictures a quiet place between two eras.
