Painted in 1892, this landscape by Paul Cézanne takes its title from a millstone and a cistern seen beneath trees. It is worked in oil on canvas. The scene is a woodland setting, and the forms within it are handled with a strong sense of geometry, so that stone, water store and foliage seem carefully assembled rather than simply observed. Cézanne is often seen as a link between Impressionism and the art that followed, and this picture shows his interest in structure within the natural world. The painting is held in the Barnes Foundation.
On your wall: Its woodland subject and measured composition suit a study, a reading corner, a dining room or a calm living space where a thoughtful landscape can be enjoyed.

Paul Cézanne was a French Post-Impressionist painter. His work brought new ways of representing the world on canvas, and it influenced the avant-garde movements of the early twentieth century. He is often seen as a bridge between the Impressionism of the late nineteenth century and the Cubism that followed it.
