Maurice Denis, 1894
A woman in black hangs linen in a walled garden, while a full moon bathes the night in golden light.

A woman dressed in black hangs linens to dry in an enclosed garden at night. By custom, the moonlight will bleach them, and the full moon fills the scene with a golden glow. The garden belongs to a former priory, a religious house where monks and nuns once lived under a prior. Maurice Denis bought the priory in 1914, turned it into a home for his large family and lived there for the last 30 years of his life. The work is oil on canvas glued to cardboard, painted in France in 1894.
On your wall: Its quiet nocturnal scene and warm golden light suit a calm bedroom, a reading corner or a hallway where you want a softly lit, contemplative mood.

Maurice Denis was a French painter, decorative artist and writer who played an important part in the shifting art of late nineteenth-century Europe. He is linked with Les Nabis, Symbolism and, later, Neo-classicism. His ideas helped lay foundations for Cubism, Fauvism and abstraction. After the First World War he founded the Ateliers d'Art Sacré and decorated church interiors.
