About this artwork

Painted in 1882, Les Tilleuls à Poissy is a landscape by Claude Monet, worked in oil on canvas. The title points to lime trees, and the painting is connected with Poissy and the Cours du 14-Juillet, the setting it depicts. It belongs to Impressionism, the movement Monet helped to found, which was concerned with expressing his perception of nature. Here that interest turns to trees and a place rather than to a grand scene, inviting you to look at the landscape much as an observer standing there might have done.

On your wall: A tree-filled landscape like this suits living rooms, studies and hallways, where its natural subject brings a calm, outdoor feeling to the space.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
