About this artwork

In the foreground, the pale trunk of a dead tree juts from a dune and draws your gaze across the waterfall towards a distant, sunlit field. There, travellers and a dog make their way along a sandy path. A ruined building, partly hidden by trees, is turned golden by the light. Ruisdael often used dead trees, waterfalls and ruins to suggest the passage of time. He gave the cloudy sky above the land just as much attention, shaping patterns of light and shadow that hint at the movement of the wind. The work is oil on canvas, made in the Netherlands around 1660–70.

On your wall: Its silvery trunk, golden light and wooded scene suit a study, living room or hallway where a calm, spacious landscape can draw the eye.
