Paul Signac painted this view of the bell tower of Saint-Tropez in 1896, in oil on canvas. The work combines two genres: it is both a cityscape and a piece of marine art, so the town and the water belong together in the scene. Signac was a French Neo-Impressionist who, alongside Georges Seurat, helped develop Pointillism. Today the painting is held in the Collection Bemberg.
On your wall: A coastal townscape like this suits living rooms, hallways and studies, especially where you want a calm, light-filled view of the sea to sit alongside softer furnishings.

Paul Signac was a French painter associated with Neo-Impressionism. Working alongside Georges Seurat, he helped develop Pointillism, a technique in which a picture is built from small, separate touches of colour. His name is closely linked with that approach, and it remains the reason his work is so often discussed today.
