Derain painted this landscape in 1905 while working alongside Henri Matisse at the fishing port of Collioure, in France. Rather than muting the scene, he built it from long strokes of vivid colour: bright green, blue, mauve and pink, all set beneath a sky of jade and turquoise. It is oil on canvas, measuring 81.3 × 100.3 cm. The painting has hung in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. since 1982, following the death of its previous owner, John Hay Whitney.
On your wall: Its vivid greens, blues and pinks would bring energy to a living room, studio or hallway, and sit well with simple, modern interiors.

André Derain was a French painter and sculptor who co-founded Fauvism alongside Henri Matisse. His work from 1905 to 1906 is known for its bold, exuberant colour. By 1910 his style had grown more restrained, shaped by his study of Cézanne and the old masters. After the First World War he became a leading figure in the Return to order.
