About this artwork

Derain painted this landscape in 1904, and the title places it in the environs of Chatou, a place he returned to as a subject. It belongs to a group of his paintings of France and of Chatou, and it is now held in a private collection. Derain is best known as the co-founder, with Henri Matisse, of Fauvism, and his work of the following years became known for its bold colour. This earlier view invites you to take in the open countryside as he saw it.

On your wall: A landscape like this suits living rooms, studies and hallways, particularly where a modern interior could use a calm view of the countryside.

About André Derain

André Derain was a French painter and sculptor who co-founded Fauvism alongside Henri Matisse. His work from 1905 to 1906 is known for its bold, exuberant colour. By 1910 his style had grown more restrained, shaped by his study of Cézanne and the old masters. After the First World War he became a leading figure in the Return to order.
